Year 4 11+ Maths Diagnostic

Check fluency, fractions, word problems and reasoning — with worked methods that reveal where mistakes are coming from.

Year 4 Maths preparation should identify whether a problem comes from knowledge, method, place value, reading the question or careless working.

Try these questions

1. 476 + 358 =

2. 864 ÷ 8 =

3. What is 3/4 of 28?

4. A cinema ticket costs £8.75. How much do four tickets cost?

5. Sam has 60 marbles. He gives 1/5 away, then wins 9 more. How many does he have now?

Worked exemplar: £8.75 × 4

Weak: £32.20

Secure: £35

Strong method: (8 × 4) + (0.75 × 4) = 32 + 3 = £35

Why this helps: the strong method shows the structure clearly, reduces place-value errors and is easy to check.

Worked exemplar: explaining an error

Question: Mina thinks 408 ÷ 4 = 12 because 8 ÷ 4 = 2. Explain her mistake.

Strong response: Mina has divided the 8 but ignored the 400. 400 ÷ 4 = 100 and 8 ÷ 4 = 2, so 408 ÷ 4 = 102.

A strong response identifies the misconception rather than simply saying the answer is wrong.

What to look for

Notice whether your child can choose an operation, show organised working, check an answer and explain why the method makes sense. Accuracy with a clear method is usually more useful in Year 4 than rushing for speed.
