Year 11 Physics – overview
Year 11 focuses on turning physics understanding into marks. We tighten equation use (rearranging, units, significant figures), polish graph skills, and practise concise explanations that match the mark scheme. Timed sections build stamina so students handle multi-step problems calmly.
Curriculum highlights
Energy & electricity
- Energy stores & transfers, efficiency, specific heat capacity
- Circuits: charge, current, potential difference, resistance
- Series/parallel; mains, power & safety
Forces & motion
- Resultant forces, work, momentum
- Distance–time & velocity–time graphs; acceleration
- Hooke’s law; terminal velocity & braking distance
Waves & electromagnetism
- Wave properties, reflection/refraction, EM spectrum
- Magnetic fields, motors & induction; transformers (separate depth varies by board)
Particle & atomic models
- Particle model, gas pressure, density required practical
- Atomic structure, isotopes, radiation & half-life; applications & hazards
Space (where taught)
- Solar system, life cycle of stars, red-shift & the expanding universe (typically Separate Physics)
Assessments & exams
- Two written papers set by AQA/OCR/Edexcel. Content broadly split across core topics; time/marks vary by board & tier.
- Tiering: Foundation (grades 1–5) and Higher (grades 4–9).
- Required practicals assessed in the written exams (methods, variables, graphs, evaluation & uncertainty).
- School mocks inform final targets and tier entry; we align our plan to mock feedback.
GCSE Physics: routes & tiers
Students take Physics either within Combined Science (two GCSEs overall) or as Separate Physics (one GCSE).
Both routes are available at Foundation (1–5) and Higher (4–9).
In Combined Science the tier applies across all six papers; in Separate Sciences tier is set per subject after diagnostics and school mocks.
How we help
- Diagnostic start. Gap-map against your board spec and tier.
- Equation fluency. Rearranging, unit checks, significant figures, and calculator layout for method marks.
- Graphs & data. Slopes, areas, uncertainties and evaluation of required practicals.
- Exam craft. Command words, 3–6 mark extended responses, and high-yield misconceptions.
- Revision cycles. Weekly homework, checkpoint quizzes and timed past-paper sections.
