Year 11 Biology – overview

Year 11 converts knowledge into marks. We sharpen factual recall, tighten required practicals, and train 6-mark extended responses. Students practise data handling, graph work and the maths that appears in Biology papers. Timed rehearsal builds calm, repeatable exam routines.

Curriculum highlights

Cell biology & organisation

  • Cells, microscopy, transport
  • Organisation: tissues, organs, systems
  • Enzymes & digestion

Infection, response & bioenergetics

  • Pathogens, immunity, antibiotics & vaccinations
  • Photosynthesis, respiration, metabolism

Homeostasis & response

  • Nervous & endocrine systems
  • Temperature, glucose & water balance

Inheritance, variation & evolution • Ecology

  • DNA, genes, inheritance, variation, natural selection
  • Ecosystems, cycles, biodiversity & human impact

Assessments & exams

Most GCSE Biology specifications use two equally weighted papers. Questions include multiple choice, structured, maths-in-biology and extended responses.

Paper Time Marks Typical coverage
Paper 1 ~1h45 ~100 Cells & organisation; Infection & response; Bioenergetics
Paper 2 ~1h45 ~100 Homeostasis & response; Inheritance, variation & evolution; Ecology

We prepare for AQA, OCR and Edexcel. Schools confirm exact board and topic order; we align teaching and past-paper practice accordingly.

GCSE Biology: routes & tiers

Students follow Biology either as part of Combined Science (2 GCSEs) or as Separate Biology (1 GCSE).
Both routes are offered at Foundation (grades 1–5) and Higher (grades 4–9).
In Combined Science, the tier must be the same across all six papers; in Separate Sciences, the tier is set per subject after school diagnostics and mocks.

How we help

  • Diagnostic start. Topic–by–topic map against your board with quick fixes for weak areas.
  • Required practicals. Methods, variables, results tables, graphs and evaluation language.
  • Exam craft. 6-mark planning, key command words, and clear, concise scientific writing.
  • Revision cycles. Weekly homework, checkpoint quizzes and mini-mocks with feedback.
  • Stretch & support. Foundation/Higher pathways accommodated; targeted intervention groups.
