Year 10 Biology

Overview

Year 10 is the foundation year of GCSE Biology. We steady KS3 knowledge, then build a secure understanding of cells and transport, organisation and systems, health and disease, bioenergetics, and core ecology ideas. Required practicals are embedded so students can plan, measure, analyse and evaluate with confidence. We teach how to convert knowledge into marks: command words, data handling, and 6-mark extended responses.

Curriculum priorities

• Cells & transport: microscopy, cell division, diffusion/osmosis/active transport, enzyme action.
• Organisation & systems: digestive & circulatory systems, gas exchange, plant transport (xylem/phloem).
• Infection & response: pathogens, immune response, vaccinations, antibiotics/antivirals, monoclonal antibodies (board-dependent).
• Bioenergetics: photosynthesis rates & limiting factors; aerobic/anaerobic respiration & metabolism.
• Ecology (intro/part): sampling, pyramids of biomass, cycles and interactions (depth varies by school).
• Required practicals & maths: microscopy, enzymes, photosynthesis, field sampling; units, % change, gradients, graph skills.

Year 10 assessments

• School assessments: topic tests, practical write-ups and an end-of-year mock inform targets for Year 11.
• Exam boards: we align teaching to AQA/OCR/Edexcel schemes used by your school.
• Routes & tiers (how it works): schools deliver Combined Science (two GCSEs) or Separate Sciences (three GCSEs). Route confirmation is usually made by school in Year 10 (varies). Biology components are entered at Foundation or Higher; decisions are guided by mock data — we advise after diagnostics.
