Assessments
No external exam. School topic tests, end-of-year exam and/or mocks. Many schools begin GCSE content in Year 9.

Year 9 Maths – overview

Year 9 is the bridge between KS3 and GCSE. We strengthen methods, close any lingering gaps from Years 7–8 and introduce the depth needed for success in Years 10–11. Many schools start GCSE topics now, so securing algebraic fluency, proportional reasoning, and geometry is essential. By the end of Year 9, students should be confident with core techniques and ready to extend to higher-demand questions in Year 10.

Curriculum priorities

Number & proportion

  • Fractions, decimals, percentages (incl. reverse %)
  • Ratio & proportion, rates, best-buy problems
  • Standard form, error bounds & estimation

Algebra

  • Expanding & factorising (incl. quadratics intro)
  • Solving linear equations & simultaneous equations
  • Rearranging formulae & inequalities
  • Sequences (linear & quadratic), graphs & functions

Geometry & measures

  • Angles, polygons, constructions & loci
  • Perimeter, area, volume; similarity & congruence
  • Pythagoras & right-angled trigonometry
  • Transformations; vectors (intro)

Statistics & probability

  • Averages & spread; representing data
  • Two-way tables, Venn & tree diagrams
  • Experimental vs theoretical probability

Year 9 assessments

There is no national external exam in Year 9. Schools use topic tests, standardised assessments, and an end-of-year exam (and sometimes mocks) to inform targets and set groups for Year 10. We align our internal checkpoints to these dates and provide parents with clear feedback on strengths and next steps.

How we help Year 9 students

  • Diagnostic start & gap-closing plan. We identify KS3 gaps and build a focused pathway into GCSE content.
  • Algebra first. We prioritise manipulation skills (expanding, factorising, rearranging, solving) that unlock higher-level topics.
  • Retrieval practice. Weekly mixed review to keep earlier topics alive and reduce forgetting.
  • Problem-solving routines. Mark-scheme language, command words and structured working are introduced now.
  • Stretch & support. Extension for confident learners; scaffolded methods and fluency drills where needed.
  • Homework & feedback. Short, regular tasks with targeted corrections to make progress visible.

Next steps to GCSE

Tier choice (Foundation or Higher) is usually confirmed during Year 10.
Year 9 is the best time to build the algebra and ratio fluency that keeps both pathways open.
If a student is on the cusp, we provide an early stretch programme so Higher remains a realistic option.
If consolidation is needed, we secure the core to aim for strong Foundation outcomes.
