No external exam. Schools use baseline/transition tests, topic tests and an end-of-year exam to inform targets and set placements.
Year 7 Maths – overview
Year 7 lays the groundwork for the whole of Key Stage 3. We secure number sense and written/mental methods, introduce formal algebra, and develop confidence with ratio, fractions/decimals/percentages, angles and measures. The aim is steady fluency plus habits of reasoning, showing clear working and communicating ideas precisely.

Number & proportional reasoning
- Place value & negative numbers; factors, multiples, primes; HCF/LCM
- Four operations incl. order of operations (BIDMAS)
- Fractions, decimals, percentages (equivalence & conversions)
- Ratio basics & unit rates; simple scaling & conversions
- Rounding & estimation for sensible answers
Algebra
- Simplifying expressions & substitution
- Expanding single brackets; factorising (intro)
- One-step and two-step linear equations
- Coordinates in all quadrants; plotting points
- Sequences: term-to-term rules (linear) and missing terms
Geometry & measures
- Angle facts (at a point, on a line, triangles & quadrilaterals)
- Polygons & symmetry; construction & scale drawings (intro)
- Perimeter & area of rectangles, triangles & composites
- Volume of cuboids; metric unit conversions
- Basic transformations: translation & reflection (intro)
Statistics & probability
- Collecting & representing data: tables, bar & line charts
- Averages (mean, median, mode) and range
- Simple probabilities & sample spaces (equally likely outcomes)
Year 7 assessments
Schools typically run a baseline test in the first term, regular topic tests and an end-of-year exam. These help identify gaps and inform set placements in Year 8. We mirror school schemes where possible and provide clear targets so families can see progress.
