Year 6 Maths – overview
Year 6 consolidates the whole of primary maths and builds exam confidence. We tighten written and mental methods, push multi-step problem solving, and practise clear working for marks. Timed tasks and review cycles develop stamina so pupils can apply what they know under SATs conditions.
Curriculum priorities
Number & arithmetic
- Fluent written methods (× ÷ incl. long division); order of operations (BIDMAS)
- Fractions: equivalence, simplify, compare; +, −, ×, ÷ fractions & mixed numbers
- Decimals & percentages: conversions, percentage of amounts, increase/decrease
- Place value incl. large numbers & rounding; negative numbers in context
Ratio, algebra & sequences
- Scale factors, recipes, proportion problems; speed/units (intro)
- Use simple algebra: unknowns, formulas, one-step equations (intro)
- Term-to-term and position-to-term rules; extend linear sequences
Geometry & measures
- Angles: at a point, on a line, in triangles/quadrilaterals; missing-angle reasoning
- 2D/3D shapes & nets; coordinates in all quadrants; translations/reflections
- Perimeter & area (rectangles, triangles, parallelograms); volume of cuboids
- Conversions: time, length, mass, capacity; metric ↔ metric
Statistics & problem solving
- Line graphs & tables; pie charts (read/interpret) where taught
- Mean average; use of range and typicality (where taught)
- Multi-step word problems choosing efficient strategies & checking by estimation
Year 6 assessments & SATs
The national KS2 SATs take place in May. Maths has three papers: Paper 1 Arithmetic (30 mins, 40 marks) and Papers 2 & 3 Reasoning (40 mins, 35 marks each). Schools also run practice papers throughout the year to track progress. We focus on fluency and exam craft: timing, layout, key vocabulary and checking methods.

- Arithmetic speed & accuracy. Daily habits for fractions/decimals/percentages and long methods.
- Reasoning frameworks. Bar models, diagrams, unit “per one” thinking and step-by-step scaffolds.
- Timed practice. Regular SATs-style mini-papers with mark-scheme walkthroughs and “gain the mark” tips.
- Confidence & language. Command words, common traps and how to show working for full credit.
- Calm routines. Checklists for the final weeks so pupils feel prepared, not overwhelmed.
Looking ahead
After SATs, we pivot to Year 7 readiness: early algebra fluency, fraction operations, ratio methods and tidy working. This smooths the move into secondary and keeps future Foundation and Higher GCSE pathways open.
