Overview
Year 4 consolidates KS2 foundations and builds pace. We aim for automatic times-tables recall (with linked division facts), reliable written methods, and clear reasoning. Students start to connect fractions with decimals, read data more carefully, and tackle multi-step word problems with tidy, line-by-line working.
Curriculum priorities
- Number & calculation: place value to 10,000; mental strategies; written +/−/×/÷; factor pairs and efficient methods.
- Times tables fluency: instant recall 0–12× and linked division facts; patterns and derived facts to boost speed and accuracy.
- Fractions & decimals: equivalence; add/subtract with same denominators; tenths and hundredths; money as decimals.
- Measures: perimeter and area of rectangles; metric conversions (mm–cm–m; g–kg; ml–l); telling time incl. 24-hour and intervals.
- Geometry: right/acute/obtuse angles; triangles and quadrilaterals properties; symmetry; simple coordinates and movement.
- Statistics: tables, bar charts and time graphs; comparing, concluding and “reasonableness” checks.
- Problem solving: choose operations, structure working, estimate and check; explain steps and justify answers.
Year 4 assessments (incl. MTC)
- Multiplication Tables Check (MTC): a short, on-screen check of 12×12 recall. We build calm speed through spaced practice and mixed question sets so recall becomes automatic.
- School assessments: topic quizzes, termly tests and an end-of-year paper inform next steps into Year 5.
- Looking ahead: strong Y4 fluency makes Y5 fractions–decimals–percentages work, and later SATs, far smoother.
11+ pathway
For families considering grammar or independent schools, Year 4 is about gentle foundations. We prioritise number sense, clean methods and pattern-spotting, adding light exposure to 11+-style problems without pressure.
- Fluency first: secure tables, written methods and estimation so accuracy comes naturally under time.
- Reasoning tasters: short weekly puzzles and word problems to build flexible thinking (with calm timing).
- Balanced approach: keep school curriculum strong while introducing the style and expectations of later 11+ tasks.
