Overview

Year 3 moves pupils from KS1 foundations into the pace of lower KS2. We emphasise solid number sense, neat written methods, and clear reasoning steps. Students extend place value to 1,000, strengthen mental strategies, and begin reliable multiplication and division methods so multi-step problems feel manageable and calm.

Curriculum priorities

  • Number & calculation: place value to 1,000; efficient mental +/−; written methods for +/− with 3-digit numbers; early ×/÷ using arrays and known facts; 3, 4 and 8 times tables with linked division facts; doubling/halving strategies.
  • Fractions & decimals: unit and simple non-unit fractions; fractions on number lines; fraction of a set; introduction to tenths and money connections.
  • Measures: length (mm–cm–m), mass (g–kg), volume (ml–l); money totals and change; tell and write the time from an analogue clock (including Roman numerals I–XII); durations and simple timetables; perimeter of rectangles and simple shapes.
  • Geometry: right angles; classify angles as greater/less than a right angle; properties of common 2D shapes; horizontal/vertical lines.
  • Statistics: tables, pictograms and bar charts (including scaled); extract, compare and explain.
  • Problem solving: choose operations, show tidy working, estimate and check, and explain reasoning in sentences.

Year 3 assessments

  • School-based: topic quizzes, termly assessments and an end-of-year paper inform targets for Year 4.
  • Times-tables build: structured practice across 2, 3, 4, 5, 8 and 10 (with division facts) to prepare for the Y4 Multiplication Tables Check.
  • Looking ahead: early fluency now makes Y4 fractions/decimals and problem solving much smoother. See Year 4 Maths.

11+ pathway

For families considering the 11+, Year 3 is light-touch foundations: strengthen number sense, pattern spotting and tidy methods, then add short reasoning tasks to build flexible thinking without pressure.

  • Reasoning tasters: brief weekly puzzles to cultivate resilience and accuracy.
  • Balanced approach: priority on the school curriculum while introducing 11+ style gradually.
