Year 11 Maths – overview

Year 11 is about converting knowledge into marks. We strengthen methods, close gaps from mock feedback and train exam technique under timed conditions. Lessons target the high-value areas on your exam board and build calm, repeatable routines for non-calculator fluency and calculator efficiency.

Curriculum highlights

Number & proportional reasoning

  • Fractions, decimals, percentages (incl. compound change)
  • Indices & surds, standard form, error bounds
  • Ratio & proportion, rates, best buys

Algebra

  • Forming & solving equations/inequalities (incl. quadratics)
  • Factorising, completing the square, quadratic formula
  • Sequences (incl. quadratic), functions & graphs
  • Simultaneous equations (incl. graphically)

Geometry & measures

  • Angles, polygons, similarity & congruence
  • Circles & circle theorems
  • Pythagoras & trigonometry (incl. graphs & 3D problems)
  • Perimeter, area, volume, vectors

Statistics & probability

  • Sampling, averages & spread
  • Charts (including cumulative frequency & box plots)
  • Venn/Tree diagrams, combined events
  • Interpreting context, units & accuracy

Assessments & exams

Most GCSE Maths specifications use three papers with equal weighting:

Paper Calculator? Time Marks Notes
Paper 1 No 1 hour 30 mins ~80 Non-calculator fluency, number & algebra methods
Paper 2 Yes 1 hour 30 mins ~80 Reasoning & problem solving across topics
Paper 3 Yes 1 hour 30 mins ~80 Further reasoning: statistics/geometry depth

We prepare for AQA, OCR and Edexcel. Tier entry (Foundation or Higher) is agreed with the school; we advise after diagnostics and mock results.

GCSE Maths tiers: Foundation vs Higher

You’ll usually know from your school which tier you’re sitting. However, we often meet students who have been placed in Foundation but are capable of Higher. After a short diagnostic and a review of your school mock data, we’ll confirm the most suitable tier and class for you.

  • Foundation (Grades 1–5)
Secure core methods, accuracy and confidence across topics.
  • Higher (Grades 4–9)
Algebraic depth, circle theorems, vectors, and advanced problem-solving.

How we help

  • Diagnostic start. We map strengths and gaps to your exam board and tier.
  • Focused teaching. Clear methods, model solutions and worked examples before independent practice.
  • Exam technique. Mark schemes, command words, layout, and speed/accuracy drills.
  • Revision cycles. Weekly homework, checkpoint quizzes, and past-paper mini mocks.
  • Mock feedback. Targeted corrections and small-group reteach on weak areas.
