Year 1 Maths overview

Year 1 bridges the play-rich EYFS approach and a more structured classroom. We build fluent number sense, neat recording and the language of maths so pupils can explain their thinking. Lessons stay practical and visual while nudging towards simple written methods.

Curriculum priorities

• Number & place value: count, read, write and order to 100; one-more/one-less; compare using <, >, =.
• Addition/subtraction: bonds to 10/20; add/subtract within 20; fact families; counting on/back; number line and tens-frame images.
• Multiplication/division (early ideas): count in 2s/5s/10s; equal groups; arrays; sharing and grouping vocabulary.
• Fractions: recognise, find and name 1/2 and 1/4 of shapes/quantities.
• Measurement: money (coins), time to o’clock/half past, length/mass/capacity comparisons.
• Geometry: name/common properties of 2D/3D shapes; position, direction, turns.
• Reasoning language: because, greater than, equal to, altogether, difference, share, half, quarter.

Assessments in Year 1

• Teacher assessment: short in-class checks, end-of-unit tasks and ongoing observation guide next steps.
• Phonics Screening Check (English): national check in June; not maths, but we coordinate plans around it. See our Phonics Check overview.
• KS1 tests: optional at the end of Year 2; no Year 1 SATs.

How we help

• CPA approach: Concrete → Pictorial → Abstract with cubes, tens-frames and bar models to make ideas stick.
• Fluency loops: daily-style practice on bonds, counting and comparisons to build automaticity without losing understanding.
• Small groups: rapid diagnosis and targeted tasks so every child moves forward confidently.
• Home habits: short, high-yield routines (bonds cards, coin games, clock talk) and simple feedback for parents.

Looking ahead

Through Year 1 we build secure phonics, fluent decoding and neat sentence writing alongside strong number sense. In maths we aim for confident bonds to 20, place value to 100 and reliable add/subtract strategies so pupils start Year 2 ready to stretch.
