Year 6 English – overview
Year 6 consolidates the whole of primary English and builds exam confidence. We sharpen close reading (selecting precise evidence, explaining the writer’s methods and effects) and raise technical accuracy in writing (sentence control, punctuation, spelling and vocabulary). Timed tasks and review cycles develop stamina so pupils can apply what they know under SATs conditions.
Curriculum priorities
Reading: inference & evidence
- Retrieve, infer and justify with concise quotations.
- Comment on language choices (vocabulary, imagery), and basic structural moves (openings, shifts in focus).
- Compare ideas across texts (where taught) and track writer intent.
Grammar, punctuation & spelling (GPS)
- Accurate sentence boundaries; comma control (lists, clauses, fronted adverbials).
- Apostrophes, colons/semicolons (where taught), cohesive devices.
- Spelling patterns, homophones, and morphology to boost accuracy.
Writing: creative & viewpoint
- Clear paragraphs with topic sentences and cohesive links.
- Purpose, audience and tone (inform, explain, persuade, describe).
- Sentence variety for effect; precise vocabulary and effective editing.
Exam craft
- Timing, question decoding, and answer structure for each item type.
- Mark-scheme awareness: where the marks come from and how to gain them.
- Calm routines and checking strategies under timed conditions.
Year 6 assessments & SATs
The national KS2 SATs take place in May. English comprises:
- Reading test: 1 paper, 60 minutes, 50 marks (reading booklet + separate answer booklet).
- GPS (Grammar, Punctuation & Spelling): Paper 1 questions (45 mins, 50 marks) and Paper 2 spelling (≈15 mins, 20 marks).
Schools also run practice papers throughout the year to track progress. We focus on inference precision, evidence selection, and writing accuracy, alongside timing, layout and key vocabulary.

Looking ahead
After SATs, we pivot to Year 7 readiness: comparison skills, tighter paragraphing and confident viewpoint/creative writing. This smooths the move into secondary and sets up success across KS3.
