Overview

Year 5 English develops confident comprehension and controlled writing. We secure sentence variety and punctuation, extend vocabulary, and practise structured paragraphs with clear purpose. Reading focuses on retrieval, inference, and using short, well-chosen evidence. Strong habits here make Year 6 SATs and any 11+ aims far smoother.

Curriculum priorities

• Reading: precise retrieval; inference about character, motive and theme; short quotations with explanation; tracking ideas across a text.
• Grammar, punctuation, spelling: clause control (simple/compound/complex), commas (lists/fronted adverbials), apostrophes, cohesive devices, core spelling patterns.
• Writing: planning for audience and purpose; topic sentences and linking; vocabulary for precision and effect; edit and improve for clarity.
• Exam craft: decode the question, structure answers, manage timing and neat presentation.

Year 5 assessments

• School-set tests: reading assessments, GPS checks and an end-of-year paper to track progression.
