Overview
Year 4 English strengthens the building blocks: close reading with evidence, sentence control, and secure spelling patterns. We develop paragraph structure with topic sentences and linking, and we practise writing for clear audience and purpose. These habits make the step to upper-KS2 smooth.
Curriculum priorities
- Reading: retrieval and inference; vocabulary in context; using short quotations to support points; summarising across a passage.
- Grammar, punctuation, spelling: simple/compound/early complex sentences; commas in lists and after fronted adverbials; apostrophes; core Y3/4 spelling rules.
