Overview
Year 3 is the first step into KS2 English. We move from early decoding to fluent, expressive reading and begin writing with clearer purpose and audience. Pupils learn to build paragraphs, choose stronger vocabulary, and punctuate consistently so ideas are easy to follow.
Curriculum priorities
- Reading fluency & prosody: phrasing, expression and confidence when reading aloud.
- Comprehension: retrieval, sequencing, “because” answers; early inference using evidence.
- Vocabulary: context clues; prefixes/suffixes (-ly, -ful, -less, -ment, -ness) to unlock meaning.
- Sentence work: statements, questions, commands; compound sentences (and, but, or).
- GPS: capitals, full stops, question marks; commas in lists; nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs; tense consistency.
- Spelling: common patterns & homophones; high-frequency words; accurate transcription.
- Handwriting: neat, regular size; begin/secure joins for fluency.
- Writing for purpose: short narratives, instructions, letters and reports with simple planning and clear paragraphs.
