Focus
Fluent decoding and expression, secure sentence writing with capitals/full stops, extend vocabulary, accurate spelling patterns and neat handwriting. Build confidence with short, well-structured writing.
Assessments
End-of-KS1 judgements are teacher assessment-led. Schools may use optional tests for evidence. Y2 phonics re-check where the Y1 standard wasn’t met.

Overview

Year 2 completes the KS1 journey. We strengthen reading fluency and expression, extend vocabulary, and secure sentence writing with consistent punctuation. Pupils learn to plan and write short pieces (stories, letters, reports), check their work for sense and accuracy, and speak about their choices using simple grammar language.

Curriculum priorities

  • Reading fluency & prosody: confident aloud reading with phrasing and expression.
  • Comprehension: retrieval and sequencing; begin inference using “because…” evidence.
  • Vocabulary: build topic and story vocabulary; use context and morphology to decode meaning.
  • Sentence control: statements, questions, commands; compound sentences (and, but, or).
  • GPS: capitals, full stops, question/exclamation marks; commas in lists; nouns/verbs/adjectives/adverbs; tense consistency.
  • Spelling: common patterns and homophones; high-frequency words; use of suffixes (-ed, -ing, -er, -est).
  • Handwriting: regular letter size and clear joins for fluent transcription.
  • Writing for purpose: short narratives, instructions and information texts with simple planning and neat layout.

Year 2 assessments

  • Teacher assessment forms the end-of-KS1 judgement in reading and writing (and maths/science). Schools often use short classroom tasks or optional tests to inform this.
  • Optional KS1 tests (where used) support teachers to confirm understanding in reading comprehension and GPS.
  • Phonics re-check is taken in Year 2 if the Y1 Phonics Screening standard wasn’t previously met.
  • Looking ahead: secure Y2 reading, spelling and sentence control makes the move to Year 3 English smooth and supports early KS2 writing stamina.

7+ pathway

If you’re considering the 7+ for selective schools, we keep KS1 fundamentals front and centre while adding age-appropriate stretch in comprehension, vocabulary and creative writing.
