Year 10 English – overview

Year 10 establishes the core skills for GCSE English Language and Literature. We sharpen close reading, evidence selection and comparison, and we coach clear, purposeful writing with accurate spelling, punctuation and grammar. Lessons build calm, repeatable exam routines so students know what each question requires and how to manage time.

Curriculum priorities

• English Language: analyse writers’ methods (language & structure), evaluate effects, compare viewpoints. Plan concise, purposeful responses. Produce descriptive, narrative and transactional writing with strong vocabulary, varied sentences and secure paragraphing.
• English Literature: deepen knowledge of set texts (Shakespeare, 19th-century novel, modern text/poetry). Track themes, characters and contexts. Use short, accurate quotations and develop comparative commentary (including unseen poetry).
• Exam craft: question-by-question frameworks, timing, annotation strategies, and building paragraphs (PEE/PEEL) that hit the mark scheme.
• Technical accuracy (SPaG): consistent punctuation, sentence variety, spelling patterns, and precise academic vocabulary.

Year 10 assessments

• In-class checks & end-of-unit tests for both Language and Literature components.
• Mocks (often winter/spring) and an end-of-year exam to confirm Y11 focus areas.
• Spoken Language endorsement is usually completed during KS4 (often in Y10 or Y11), assessed as Pass/Merit/Distinction.
