Our Beyond Method puts the student’s needs at the centre of teaching. It gives tutors a clear way to decide what to teach, how much help to give and when to change approach.

The Beyond Method: teaching that responds to your child

A completed worksheet is only part of the picture. We want your child to understand, explain and apply what they have learned with increasing independence.

  1. Define: Agree what matters most for your child: confidence, understanding, gaps, exam preparation or independence.
  2. Diagnose: Use questions, prior work and short tasks to identify strengths, gaps and misconceptions.
  3. Prioritise: Choose the gaps that will make the biggest difference, rather than trying to fix everything at once.
  4. Prompt: Use questions and clues to draw out your child’s thinking, with enough support to help them start.
  5. Check: Ask your child to explain and apply the learning independently, then revisit it later or in a different question.
  6. Change: Adapt the pace, task, explanation, level of support or next focus in response to what your child can do.

This is a continuous loop: tutors revisit the student’s needs and change the teaching response as learning develops.

What this looks like in a lesson

If your child struggles with fractions, the first step is to find the blocker. It might be multiplication facts, equivalent fractions, vocabulary or choosing a method. A tutor can then focus the practice and check whether your child can answer without a prompt.

In English, a student may understand a story but struggle to explain an interpretation. Questions can help them choose evidence and develop their own explanation before writing independently.

A purposeful lesson, with room to adapt

Lessons may include a welcome and learning focus, recall of earlier work, a modelled example, prompted attempts, guided practice, an independent check and a next step. Tutors adjust the balance to the needs of the class. This lesson structure supports the Beyond Method; the method itself is the six-step teaching loop above.

Useful feedback for parents

Our aim is to help you understand what your child has covered, what is going well, one area to focus on and a practical next step. Progress includes confidence and independence as well as accuracy and attainment.
