Haberdasher’s Boys’ School was founded in 1690 as a result of bequest by the merchant Robert Aske of £20,000 to the Worshipful Company of Haberdashers, and the school was established to provide education for the sons of poor freemen between the ages of nine and fifteen. After some time of struggle, where the number of pupils dropped to just eight in 1714, the school began to grow in popularity, and in 1874, the school was divided into two halves, one for boys and one for girls. In 1961, the Boys’ school moved to its present site in Elstree, and in 1974, the girls’ school moved to the adjacent site.
