Free Year 4 11+ Readiness Assessment
Find out which Maths, English and reasoning foundations are secure now — and what is worth teaching before Year 5 becomes more exam-specific.
This is not a pass/fail paper. It is a diagnostic starting point for parents considering structured 11+ preparation in Year 4. The aim is to identify patterns: secure knowledge, unfamiliar question types, vocabulary gaps, careless errors, pace and independence.
What should a Year 4 readiness check tell you?
Maths
Can your child use core arithmetic accurately, work with fractions, time and money, and explain a multi-step method?
English
Can they retrieve information, infer from clues, explain an answer using evidence and write with increasingly precise vocabulary?
Verbal Reasoning
Can they spot word relationships, use vocabulary carefully and follow simple letter or number rules?
Non-Verbal & Spatial Reasoning
Can they describe rotations, reflections, sequences and visual changes rather than relying on guessing?
A quick Year 4 mini-diagnostic
Maths: 1) 36 × 7 = ___ 2) What is 3/4 of 28? 3) A ticket costs £8.75. What do four cost?
English: Read: Amira tightened the straps of her backpack. The hill was almost empty and the light was fading. What does this suggest about how Amira feels? Give one clue from the sentence.
Verbal Reasoning: 1) Bird is to nest as bee is to ___. 2) Rapid is closest in meaning to: quiet / swift / rough / late.
Non-Verbal Reasoning: If a shape rotates 90° clockwise each step, how will it face after four steps compared with the start?
Finished? Look for the pattern, not the percentage
Which section was strongest? Where did your child need prompting? Were they accurate but slow? Did unfamiliar reasoning types cause the problem? Could they explain how they got an answer?
That pattern is what a good Year 4 programme should respond to.
Bring the results to a taster/assessment
If you would like help interpreting what you saw, bring your child’s answers to a Redbridge Tuition Year 4 taster/assessment. We can identify the most useful teaching priorities and recommend the right starting point.

Frequently asked questions
Is this a real 11+ paper?
No. Year 4 is generally better used to diagnose and teach the underlying skills than to chase full mock-paper scores.
What score should my child get?
Do not treat the result as a pass mark. A balanced profile matters more than one percentage.
Should I help during the questions?
Avoid teaching new methods while your child is completing the check. If they genuinely do not know how to begin, that is useful information.
What should we do next?
Choose two or three priorities first. If you want help identifying them, bring the work to a taster/assessment.
Ready to turn the results into a teaching plan?
Tell us your child’s year group and preferred centre. We can then recommend the most suitable Year 4 class or taster/assessment route.
