Free Year 3 Readiness Check
A simple parent-friendly check of English, Maths and learning habits before Year 4.
This is not an 11+ test. It is designed to help parents see whether the foundations are becoming secure and where a little extra teaching could make the biggest difference.
English check
1. Read a short page from your child’s current reading book. Can they explain what happened without retelling every detail?
2. Ask: “Why did the character do that?” Can they give a reason based on something in the text?
3. Choose one unfamiliar word. Can they use the surrounding sentence to suggest what it might mean?
4. Ask them to write 3-4 sentences about a familiar topic. Are the sentences punctuated and easy to follow?
Maths check
1. 46 + 37 =
2. 90 – 48 =
3. 6 × 7 =
4. What is half of 36?
5. A toy costs £4.50. How much do two cost?
6. Can your child explain how they found the answer rather than only state it?
Learning habits
Can they work independently for around 15-20 minutes? Do they re-read a question? Will they correct an error without becoming discouraged? Can they explain a method? These behaviours are worth noticing now.
What the results mean
Mostly independent: keep extending reading, vocabulary and problem-solving gradually.
Needs some prompting: common in Year 3; focus on the specific skill rather than adding more worksheets.
Several core gaps: targeted tuition can help secure foundations before Year 4 becomes more demanding.
