Why this is more useful than another practice paper

A normal practice paper

Shows which questions were right or wrong and gives an overall sense of performance.

Find the Gap

Uses the pupil’s responses and working to help you investigate why marks may be being lost and what to prioritise next.

A wrong fraction answer, for example, might come from a misunderstanding of the denominator, a calculation slip or misreading the instruction. Those need different responses. The diagnostic notes are therefore clues, not automatic labels: always look at the pupil’s working and repeated patterns before deciding what needs re-teaching.

The Redbridge diagnostic cycle

Use the assessment to move from identifying gaps to focused teaching rather than simply giving more papers.

1

Diagnose

Complete the assessment without coaching.

2

Teach

Choose the two or three most important gaps.

3

Practise

Use short, focused practice rather than more random questions.

4

Recheck

Test the skill again with a fresh question.

What does it check?

  • Number and place value
  • Calculation
  • Fractions, decimals and percentages
  • Ratio and proportion
  • Measurement
  • Statistics
  • Mathematical reasoning

How to use it

  1. Give the pupil the pupil booklet and let them complete it without coaching.
  2. Mark it with the complete pack, including multiple-choice and written responses.
  3. Look for patterns across the profile and the pupil’s working.
  4. Choose only two or three priorities, then teach, practise and recheck them.

Who is it for?

The resource is designed primarily for Year 6 pupils preparing for KS2 SATs. It can also be useful late in Year 5 when you want an early snapshot of gaps before Year 6.

The pupil booklet uses clear instructions, generous working space and a low-clutter layout. Where a child normally receives reading support, an adult may read the wording aloud without explaining the mathematics.

For broader preparation, visit the SATs preparation hub, our Year 6 Maths SATs guide, or explore Year 6 Maths tuition.

Important note

This is an independent Redbridge Publishing diagnostic resource. It is not an official Standards and Testing Agency paper and is not endorsed by the Department for Education. Its score should not be converted into a SATs scaled score.
