History

Old Chigwell school
Chigwell School in 1904

The School was formally founded in 1629 by Samuel Harsnett, the Archbishop of York, opening with 16 ‘poor scholars’. The school grew steadily, and in 1873, a bursary programme for girls to attend other schools was introduced. The sixth-form section then became co-educational and girls were first admitted in 1974. This led to the rest of the school becoming co-ed in 1997.
